- 1 package Cheddarwurst® Smoked Sausage
- 8 ounces cellentani pasta
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- 1/4 cup green peas
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- salt and pepper, to taste
- Boil a pot of water to cook the pasta but do not salt the pasta water. Add the pasta and boil for 9 minutes. Add the broccoli and peas to the boiling water. Cook for an additional 2 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of the hot pasta water and set aside. Strain the pasta and vegetables.
- Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook stirring occasionally until lightly browned, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium low and add the butter. Once the butter has melted, add the flour while stirring constantly until the flour has completely dissolved into the butter. Add the milk while stirring and cook just until the sauce begins to simmer. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the cheese. Then, slowly add the reserved cup of hot pasta water while stirring until desired consistency is achieved. This should create a smooth and creamy cheese sauce.
- Add the sausage, pasta, and vegetables to the cheese sauce and stir until everything is coated with sauce. Taste and season as desired with salt and black pepper.
